June 13: The Economic Affairs Minister, Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk, the Chief Executive Officer of G4S security service, Palden Dorji and the Managing Director of Etho Metho Tours and Treks, Dago Beda, are the first three Bhutanese MDG3 Campaign Torch bearers.
The MDG3 global call to action campaign was initiated by the government of Denmark on March 7 this year to make gender equality and women’s empowerment a priority on the international agenda. It aims to accelerate the achievement of all the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
Accepting the torch for MDG3 global call to action on economic empowerment of women, the Economic Affairs Minister, Lyonpo Khandu Wangchuk said he will commit towards promoting women entrepreneurship and women participation in training programmes and human development activities.
The chief executive officer of the G4S security service, Palden Dorji said he will work to increase the number of women security personnel in the country.
Dago Beda, the Managing Director of Etho Metho Tours and treks said she will focus on employment for rural women.
According to Henrik Nielsen, the head of the Liaison office of Denmark, people, particularly in economic sector who can empower women, are selected as torch bearers. He said Bhutan is on track, when it comes to achieving gender equality.
More than 100 torches are traveling worldwide, requesting the torch bearers representing government, the private sector, international organizations and the media to make an additional commitment to do something extra in support of implementing the third Millennium Development Goal.
As of June 6, 39 torches were handed over to the leaders worldwide.
The torches and catalogue of pledges will be presented to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at the UN high level meeting in September 2008.
