Bhutan’s first ever publisher’s fair

7 April, 2008 - A variety of books ranging from encyclopedia, sports and physical education, to leisure and children books are on display in the first ever book fair organized by the ministry of education at the new YDF complex in Thimphu.

More than 14 publishers and book vendors from India and Bhutan are participating in the book fair, with the intent to promote and create awareness about reading habits for Bhutanese society.

Zinpai Zangmo, DSE of CAPSD, Paro, said that the main objective of the book fair is to pursue excellence in education. “The book fair is aimed at developing libraries in schools around the country and, at the same, time improve and sustain reading habits of the students,” she said. “It’s a maiden attempt from CAPSD’s side and, if it goes well, we’re planning to have it annually.”

According to Raju Barman of Rupa & co., the venue of the book fair is quite far from the city. “The crowd is quite thin here and the common people participation is less,” he said. But for R K Ahuja of Anmol publication pvt. ltd., the book fair is a great chance to promote and create awareness among teachers and student about the kind of books they publish.

For fair visitors like Kenton Yonten, a teacher from Wangdicholing in Bumthang, it is an opportunity to make choices of books. “I’ve been to mini book fairs but never to such a big book fair, where you have ample books to choose from on various subjects,” he said.

Publishing houses such as Cambridge university press, Oxford, Pearson and Mc Graw Hill education, all from Kolkata, India, and Bhutanese book vendors are participating in the fair, which will go on till April 8.
