Tshering Dorji, declared Mr. Thimphu


June 2: Tshering Dorji, a Bhutanese man who lives in Finland and an avid body builder, has been declared Mr. Thimphu.

He won the first national body building competition in Thimphu on Saturday. The competition was held at the Swimming Pool Complex.

He walked away with a cash prize of Nu. 18,000. Tshering Dorji who topped in his category of above 75 kilograms was also adjudged the overall first.

The body-building competition was held in three categories - above 75 kilograms, 75 kilograms and under 65 kilograms. In all the three categories, those who emerged first, second, and third were awarded cash prizes of Nu. 15,000, Nu. 10,000 and Nu. 5,000.

The General Secretary of the Bhutan Weight Lifting and Body Building Federation Wangchen said the participants were judged on muscle mass, definition and symmetry and presentation. He said the competition will be held annually.

24 participants including students, civil servants and school leavers participated in the competition. The Bhutan Weight Lifting and Body Building Federation, was officially launched in May 2004.

According to an official from the Bhutan Olympic Committee, the federation was started to provide Thimphu youths with the opportunity to do weight training.
